In Windows you could keep a shortcut (.lnk) in the book folder, it would have a 'calibre name' but it would target a folder or file that has a 'zeitchef name', similarly in OSX you could use an alias file, and in Linux perhaps you could use a symbolic link. You would also have the problem of getting from calibre to the format files - which is not insurmountable. If you follow this route you'll lose some major features, such as integration with reader devices and third party apps like Calbre Companion, Calibre Cloud etc. It is possible to use Calibre as a catalog without any book format files, it will have the same library/author/book title folder hierarchy, but the book folder would only have a cover.jpg and the metadata.ofp (it's a backup for use in restoring the database). Zeitchef - the folder & file names within the library are not the names used when a book is Sent to a device or Saved to disk, those are defined by the user via templates.
